Following in the footsteps of developers like Blizzard, Craig Robinson, a community developer for Rainbow Six Siege, gave some insight in a recent Reddit post as to how Ubisoft’s new system of fighting toxic gaming would work. Robinson stated that, “starting next week, we will be implementing an improvement on the system we have been using to ban players that use racial and homophobic slurs, or hate speech, in game.”
As further described in the post, bans will last for either 2 days, 7 days, 15 days, or permanently depending on the severity of the offense. Robinson writes that the frequency at which any particular player uses language that violates the game’s Code of Conduct will be tracked, with appropriate bans handed out on a case-by-case basis. The section regarding such language in the Code of Conduct reads: “Any language or content deemed illegal, dangerous, threatening, abusive, obscene, vulgar, defamatory, hateful, racist, sexist, ethically offensive or constituting harassment is forbidden.”
This isn’t the first time Robinson has been involved in the debate of toxic gaming in Rainbow Six Siege, being the first one to reveal that Ubisoft was working on new measures only a week ago. In response to popular YouTuber Macie Jay’s tweet about possible bans, Robinson said that the developer is in the process of testing new methods to ban toxic players. Robinson has also since taken to Twitter to make it clear that abusive and offensive behavior wouldn’t be tolerated:
The topic of toxic gaming has been on the tongues of much of the gaming industry as of late. As well as the previously mentioned Blizzard, other developers such as League of Legends dev Riot Games have begun taking actions against such behavior. Last week Xbox head Phil Spencer make the issue one of the main points of discussions at his keynote address at the DICE Summit.
Regardless, Ubisoft is sure to be feeling the pressure over the next few weeks. With the game’s first year 3 DLC, Operation Chimera, dropping in a few days, as well as the timed “zombie mode” Outbreak event set to begin with it, all eyes are going to be on the Rainbow Six Siege team. Just think, with a player base of 27 million and counting that’s a lot of eyes.
Rainbow Six Siege is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
